READING @ BEDTIME IS FOR SNUGGLES, NOT STRUGGLES
Bedtime “Read-Alouds” are for love, language, and letting go of the day’s cares. That’s it. Nothing more: no teaching, no testing, no struggling to master a skill.
Snuggles, Not Struggles
Your child is tired, you’re tired, and your mutual attitude at that point is, “I’m done.” And so you should be. The vast plethora of children’s books is a treasure trove of beautiful illustrations, language, and–of course!–stories. All of this enriches snuggle time and gives your child a glimpse into the magic of books.
Don’t Teach Reading
So don’t be tempted to teach reading at read-aloud time; resist the urge to pause in reading and ask, “What’s this word? You know this word, don’t you?” If your child wants to volunteer, fine. But remember that what you’re after at bedtime is pure love…love of being with Mom or Dad, love of entering the universal world of stories, and a growing love of reading..
So save teaching for “awake time” when you’re both well fed and rested.
(Yawn)…where’s my favorite book?
G’nite!
